Thinking Like a Lake: Lessons from Aldo Leopoldx
Aldo Leopold is recognized as one of the leading conservationists not only in Wisconsin, but
worldwide. Leopold dedicated himself to the notion that private landowners
could do the right things on their property to ensure land health. He
summarized his litmus test in an oft-quoted passage, “A thing is right when
it tends to preserve the integrity, stability and beauty of the biotic
community. It is wrong when it tends otherwise.” Leopold rarely took up
lake-related issues, which is somewhat surprising given the amount of time
he spent in the Great Lakes region. However, his core concepts regarding
natural resource conservation readily apply to the concerns of lake lovers
such as clear water, diverse fisheries, and scenic beauty. Eric’s talk will
distill some of Leopold’s lessons for the Long Lake area and show how his
ideas and concepts are as relevant today as they were 60-70 years ago.
