According to co-chairs Wes Mohns, LLPA, and Rich Alvin, Long Lake Chamber, the major restocking project for Long Lake is on schedule for April, 2006. As in 2004 and 2005, the portable “walleye wagon” fish hatchery will be set up at Dave’s Outboard, using native spawn and eggs taken from Long Lake walleyes.
The combination of using local lake water and the spawn and eggs collected from local walleyes greatly increases the chances of fry surviving the elements to maturity. The wagon can produce as many as 3 million fry. The projected survival rate for fry is about 15%, which could add another 15,000 mature walleyes annually to the lake.
The cooperation, expertise, and financial support from member organizations, and volunteer members from the following organizations make this project possible:
The DNR provides equipment, and staff from the local DNR office in Spooner, together with members of Walleyes for Tomorrow, train and work closely with our volunteers during the critical spawning time to ensure success. Volunteers are needed to help set up the hatchery, net and strip fish, or to monitor the egg hatch for spring 2006. Stop by Dave’s Outboard in April to see this project in action.
